FOIX, France — A brief look at Sunday’s 14th stage of the 99th Tour de France:
Stage: A 191-kilometer route out of Limoux and into the Pyrenees mountains featuring two major climbs and a technical downhill 25 kilometers from the finish in Foix.
Winner: Luis Leon Sanchez of Spain. Sanchez was among a group of five riders who broke away on the final ascent of the day, the Mur de Peguere.
He then made his decisive move 11 kilometers (7 miles) from the finish to claim his fourth Tour stage win. Green jersey holder Peter Sagan of Slovakia finished second, 47 seconds behind Sanchez. Frenchman Sandy Casar was third in the same time.
Tack trouble: Several dozen riders punctured their tires on tacks, scattered across the road during the descent of the Mur de Peguere. French police are investigating what appeared to have been an act of vandalism. Defending champion Cadel Evans had three flats and only avoided losing time due to a decision by other riders to slow the pace and wait for those delayed by the punctures.
Yellow Jersey: Briton Bradley Wiggins retained the race lead ahead of Sky teammate Christopher Froome, who is 2 minutes and 5 seconds behind. Italian climber Vincenzo Nibali is third, 2:23 off the pace.
Stat of the day: Zero. As in the change to the race’s overall Top 10, with the top riders all finishing in the same group some 18:15 behind stage winner Sanchez.
Quote of the day: “It’s a criminal act, I think you’re taking peoples’ lives in your hands and creating a very dangerous situation.” Jim Ochowicz, manager of Cadel Evans’ BMC Racing team, on the tacks that caused many riders to puncture.
Today’s 15th stage: A flat 158.5-km stage between Samatan and Pau tailored to give sprinters one more chance for a stage win before two very difficult mountain stages. Riders will only have to negotiate three minor hills in the last third of the race before a likely mass sprint into Pau, where green jersey holder Peter Sagan will attempt to go for a fourth stage win of the Tour.
